Aaron has a great post up on Movie Filtering Technology - I’m All For It. It's well thought out and has very practical reasoning in favor of technology which can filter out objectionable material.
I’ve often likened good parenting to treating an heirloom white linen tablecloth with extremely light applications of ScotchGuard, so as to retain the quality of the material forever. If something stains early, the tablecloth will likely be permanently ruined. But a childhood of good values may enable early light spills and later heavy spills to be wiped off without damage.
Hollywood is like a raging drunk holding an open bottle of Merlot over our clean children’s souls, narcissistically demanding that nobody take precautions to protect them.
Movie filtering is no more than sliding coasters under bottles and glasses. Wine isn’t the problem, but it’s not appropriate for the young and shouldn’t be distributed by the irresponsible. Moreover, a parent might responsibly allow a child to have a sip or small glass but not drink as much as an adult. Hollywood is effectively espousing an irrational all-or-nothing approach. Either you are a tee-totaller or need to drink as much as they insist with no parental control.
Again, explain to me why I shouldn’t be able to auto-mute “penis breath” and two occurrences of “shit” from ET.
I like Aaron's imagery. And, frankly, I think I'd allow the Darling Munchkin to watch a few more movies if I had this tool.
