This is what we did today - the Beloved Husband was volunteering for our local rescue squad, which was selling hot dogs and hamburgers at the auction. So, the Darling Munchkin and I went over, and had quite a bit of fun!
One particular point: before they began the auction, they recognized and thanked the veterans, said the Pledge - including "under God" - and opened in prayer.
I LOVE real America!
The Munchkin was very excited that she got to touch the "cows" (um, sweetie, they're BOYS - that means they're BULLS), although I'm not certain the yearling bulls returned the sentiment.
She was far more interested in offering them grass than they were in eating it. Nevertheless, she had a wondeful time, and even chose one of the bulls as her "friend." We didn't stay long enough to see him auctioned (#39, I hope you enjoy your new home!).
I am so glad this is breeding stock, and not beef on the hoof! ;-)
The participating farms, Daltons on the Sycamore, Mt. Rush Farm, Shelton Angus Farm, and Locust Level Farms are, apparently ("apparently" only because I know nothing about the subject) all members of the PerformAngus Breeders group/association, and they auctioned off about 60 young bulls.
They are really rather handsome animals (if you look at the right end, anyway):
The auction itself looked like an advertisement for Carhartt; everybody was wearing it! Before the auction started, of course, the buyers were walking among the cattle, checking their ear tags and discussing each animal.
And then, of course, was the auction itself:
All in all, a very fun day! And now, we're waiting on the Beloved Husband/Daddy's return from an emergency call. I hope it's nothing terrible!
After he gets back, we'll go up to Lynchburg and watch Narnia, eat dinner, and maybe do a little shopping!
