Captain Ed has information about the memorial for United Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Apparently someone in the design committee is more than unusually stupid, because this is an incredible example of Clueless Memorial design, take 2.
Have a look:
Is this an insensitive outrage, or what? This is a blatent slap in the face to the families of those heroes who sacrificed themselves on that plane! Frankly, something far more appropriate would be to have a symbol of Osama bin Laden and radical Islam in a convenient place to visitors may spit on it.
No, no. Back to the drawing board, you idiots. Ah, forget that, you're fired! Let's find some patriots who will forget about being "PC" and design something worthwhile!
[fuming - gadzooks, the sheer gall of some people!]
A _crescent_?!?!?
*sheesh* Since the time of the Ottoman Empire, the crescent and star symbol have been firmly associated with Islam. Anything with a crescent as its central feature seems highly inappropriate.
Some people are born jackasses. Some are self-made jackasses. I wouldn't even begin to venture which the designers of this abortion are.
(On a positive note, though, if they are self-made jackasses, then at least they've done _something_ with themselves... )

David, David, David! My dear friend and blog-brother.
You are too funny... and too right!
Oh, and BTW, you will be getting a recipe, just not this week. I got caught up in writing two posts for this weekend (guess on which topics?), and I even did a little more unpacking. But next week, you get to see La cucina del Gata Roméo! How's about THEM apples?? LOL

I don't know --- it kind of touches me to look at that picture (in it's peaceful presense). I honestly don't think that those who built that memorial were underestimating what happened or didn't respect those who died for us. It looks like some of the families are happy with it too.
More than anything, I think that site is a place to grieve. And I think pictures of the terrorists would retard the grieving process for these people.
That's just my opinion, though.
By the way, I found another Liberal who you may want on your Intelligent Opposition. I was thinking of Kevin from "Preemptive Karma".

Ticklebug, I will agree that the images and mise en scene are very peaceful.
However, the designers should have been hyper-sensitive to the imagry of the memorial, as well as avoiding ANY possible connections with Islam. Very much entirely inappropriate in this case.
At best, it's clueless, at worst, it's PC at it's most callous.

We believe there are a lack of (or maybe "ANY") 'appropriate' 9/11 memorials, anywhere. We've put our own 5 minute video memorial online. No burning buildings, no rubble, no explosions, no speeches, no screeches, no Bin Laden, no bodies. Just a remembrance of some people whose lives were cut short through no fault of their own, with poignant candid snapshots from their lives, and music.
Thought you might want to spend a few moments today, remembering.

Wooops, I didn't get the Islam connection with that. Quite frankly, I just skimmed througha that article.
I see what you mean now, and I stand corrected.
