The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is coming to the big screen this Friday! From what I've seen on the trailers and other information, I absolutely have GOT to see this movie; it looks awesome!
And, I'm told, that it is true to the book, which is absolutely critical for this type of movie. Also, it looks like Weta - the costume/effects/and everything else shop that did the Lord of the Rings movies - is in on this movie, too. Therefore, I'm sure the effects and costuming will be brilliant.
The actors they got for the kids look just right - although I'm not certain yet about the young lady who plays Lucy. The trailers didn't give her enough exposure for me to really get a feel for her (which is, I suppose, just what trailers are supposed to do: encourage us to see the movie!), but she seems "right," too.
Here are some Narnia sites for you to check out -

NarniaWeb (long trailer - yummy!)
Frankly, R'Cat, I have some reservations, but only because the Narnia Chronicles have been fav books of mine since I was eleven. C.S. Lewis is a much-read author at our house. I know I'll go see the flick and TRY to see it on its own merits, but I dread not seeing what I fear will be left out and seeing what I fear will be changed.
But that's just me, and if it moves a few people to actually read the books, then great.
Still, yeh, no matter what is left out or marginalized or over=emphasized or altered, it will be difficult to obscure Lewis' story. And the graphic effects will very likely be terrific.
BTW, have you seen the (older) BBC TV production of the first few books, serialized? Yeh, the "special effects" were cheesy—in a video frame of reference; they were more like a stage presentation—but I was very pleasantly surprised to see how closely they hewed to Lewis' own words. We watched them around Christmas every year when the children were younger.
Enjoy the movie. I know I will. (And afterward, I will no doubt shred it in critical discussion with the kids and my Wonder Woman, since I have no dounbt we'll see it as a family holiday excursion. S'just the way I am. :-)

I agree with you, David - but, unfortunately, it's a fact of life that the movie of a book rarely is a perfect reflection of that book.
Putting aside that film and writing are two different media, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, it's simply that each reader has his own vision of the book. Things like how we imagine the characters' appearance (I think the actress who plays Susan looks exactly like *I* imagined her), or how we "heard" them talk will often significantly effect how we view the movie.
But, like I said, I've heard that there was a determined and concentrated effort to keep the movie true to the book and not *gasp* "Disnify" it - THANK GOD!
And, I never saw the BBC, although I'd heard about it. Hm, perhaps it's something I need to track down for our DVD collection...
