Because I hate pieced borders. But, this quilt needed one...
Anyway, here are the fabrics I pulled from my stash. Raven said she likes earth tones, particularly pink and brown. I've done a pink and brown quilt before, so I knew that, although it might sound odd, it's really a beautiful combination.
Of course, the fabrics are much more yummy than the picture makes them...
I decided to make sawtooth stars for the quilt center. For some odd reason, I use sawtooth stars a lot. I suppose I just like this simple little block. I had a total of thirty different fabrics, so I made thirty blocks, each six inches (finished) per side.
The medium brown star up at the top uses some fabric from Seth's quilt (the red background), which I thought would be fun, since they're both friends I haven't met face-to-face yet.
And, here are all the blocks, ready to be sewn together:
After adding the first border, I looked at the quilt and decided a) I wanted it to be a little bigger than it would be if I just slapped on the second border, and b) I was going to have to add a pieced border.
I hate pieced borders! Even though you measure and sew carefully, they never seem to come out quite right - they ripple and stretch, and... Well, they're a pain.
*sigh*
But, it needed to be done to make this quilt sing, so I bit the bullet.
Raven, this is how much I love you! I pieced a border for you. I expect lots of "oooooohs" and "aaaahhhhhhs"! LOL
Oh, and yeah, that's my Bernina 135 again. My 180 was making an odd clackety-clackety sound, so she got taken to the doctor. I'll pick her up on Friday, she's fine, but this is one time I'm glad that the Darling Munchkin hasn't been using "her" machine.
However, I'm going to have to see if I can change that!
Finally, here's what the finished quilt top looks like.
See? I knew it needed that extra border!
Danged awesome....

Kat, I was just commenting to the Bro about how you were still MIA and wondering what that meant- now I know. Ravens quilt is really awe inspiring to say the least. I did a mock up of the 9 patch variation and discovered that the size was wrong. I went right out and bought a 1/4 foot for my machine- that should help. I also just bought the fabric to make my next compassion or big hug quilt which I need to have made next Wed. Whats to blogging when there is fabric that has been cut and resewn yet???? Love ya

Gee, kinda (almost) makes me wanna haul out Wonder Woman's old machine and have a go... Almost. Still have too many of my own kinda projects to get finished up, but it looks like fun.

Wow -- you're making me a quilt? But, we hardly know each other...Is it because I said I liked the Honor Harrington series?
What? It's for that OTHER Raven? Oh, I see! Yes, a quilt for that lovely lady makes much more sense.
Beautiful work, by the way...carry on!
