In a rare - but welcome! - instance of seriousness, Scott Ott, editor of the satire site, Scrappleface, responds to an e-mail:
The victims of Katrina are not really the victims of Katrina herself. The tragedy began long before the hurricane hit.
Natural disasters have always happened and always will. While,
mercifully, they don’t occur every day in every place, they are common
enough that we ought to have an expectation that bad things can and
will happen. We need to cultivate the inner resources in ourselves, our
children and our neighborhoods to cope with the inevitable. When we
cede that power and responsibility to the federal government, we
surrender a part of what makes us human and leave ourselves more
vulnerable to the tempest.[...]
Our state-run schools and spoon-fed media have conditioned us to
look to government. They’ve also trained us to take offense at any
expression of love that doesn’t result in government intervention and
redistribution of taxpayer dollars. ‘Compassion’ has been redefined as
‘entitlement’ and thus stripped of its power and utility. The devastating impact of this mindset is the apparent withering of
the individual spirit and of community cooperation which have been the
hallmarks of this great nation. But all is not yet lost, and perhaps not so much is lost as we have been led to believe.
These are just two little excerpts, and yet the whole piece sings of the beauty and durability and perseverance of the human spirit.
Please go read the whole thing!

Naw, all the problems of New Orleans were brought upon theirselfs. (that's "themselves") They created the Cat5 hurricane, toppled the levees, etc, etc, etc. Our government didn't have anything to do at all with the suffering, starvation, etc.....NOPE THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH HURRICANE KATRINA. What a great government we have with Dubya in charge. How lucky can any individual be with Dubya looking out for their interests. How lucky can we be with Dubya looking out for all of our interests (Just FYI, it's not the President's - or the Federal Government's - responsibility to look out for you like that. Are you an adult? Or are you a baby that needs to be spoon-fed from cradle to grave?) ......Thank god I'm a underage deleted for inappropriate content, crook, with a DWI, otherwise I wouldn't get so much support from our god fearing leader. (See precious comment)
One whole paragraph deleted due to obscenity and sheer trollish moonbattery
