Thanks to the Darling Munchkin's spelling list this week, I have come across the American's Creed. I don't know why I've never heard of it before: it's been around for a while.
Nevertheless, I present it here for your edification - we would ALL do well to memorize it and keep it in the forefront of our thoughts every day.
I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies. [emph. mine]
Amen! THAT is what every American should pledge! (Of course, I would end it "... to defend it against all enemies, foreign and domestic," but that's just me...)
Oh, and speaking of spelling lists, all her words this week are taken from founding and important American documents and speeches: The Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the American's Creed, and the Gettysburg Address. I am very thankful, because this gives me an opening to discuss the meaning of these words, and explain how critically important they are to our country and our culture. Every opportunity I'm given, I try to use to train the Munchkin in being a good citizen and a thinking, independent patriot.
God bless America - or, more importantly,
