Twenty-two years ago, President Reagan challenged Gorbachev and the Soviet Union to tear down the wall between east and west Germany:
This week, we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of that wall coming down. My husband was based in Spain at the time, and we watched on AFN television as history unfolded. Only two months prior, we were in Munich at Oktoberfest. We spoke with a German couple who earnestly insisted that the wall would never be removed and that Germany would never be reunited.
I think - I hope! - that they rejoiced when proven wrong.
This is the kind of wonderful, amazing and uplifting historic moment that can happen when America stands firm on principle and does not yield to tyranny. When we lead from our foundation of liberty and justice, the world will follow. Tyrants fall, evil is defeated, slaves are set free and liberty is proclaimed.
I pray that God will again bless this land with strong leaders of good character and moral fortitude, so that America can be that shining city on a hill again.
If you haven't seen it I would recommend the movie "Goodbye Lenin." It is a bittersweet German comedy drama set around the fall of East Berlin. It's in German, with subtitles.
